I am an old school Carlos Santana fan. One who would much rather listen to the smooth, liquid runs of Samba Pa Ti than the Supernatural sounds of “Smooth.” For me it’s just too hard to erase and compare the image of Carlos jamming out on Soul Sacrifice in the supernatural spaces of the Woodstock stage in the summer of 69 (for the record, I have those images only from the movie as I was not yet old enough to walk) than in the summer of ‘99 watching him back up Rob Thomas of MatchBox 20 on VH1.
Clearly there are two faces of the Shaman.
Now I don’t begrudge Santana’s tangential bend into the sugary world of pop and the top 40 countdown with Casey Kasem. But if I were going to a Santana show in 2006, I would much prefer to listen to the Santana I grew up idolizing prior to the Supernatural big bang.
For those concertgoers who saw Carlos at Shoreline, fortunately they caught Carlos playing in his old, Evil Ways.
