TRY! is the latest release from crooner and guitar slinger John Mayer. He's going the way of Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Cream, Johnny Winter with a no-frills approach to his sound, the trio. The album is a semi-departure from the sugary, soft, and fluffy sounds of "Room For Squares" and "Heavier Things" with heavier and bluesier Strat tones from his hands and a bit more grit in his voice. Clearly he's bringing out all the Stevie-Jimi-BB-Buddy he can in his playing, and he sounds great, but can't quite keep it in that tin pan alley for too long. The music more or less slips back into the sugar tones of his freshman and sophomore releases.
There's no doubt that John Mayer is a triple threat. He can write songs, sing and play guitar with the best of them, but can't quite pull off the Jimi and Stevie Ray sound just yet.
